The Côte d'Azur extends along the French Mediterranean coast from Cassis (Bouches-du-Rhone) to Menton on the Italian border. The coast is one of the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur. The surrounding countryside is mountainous and dominated by the Maritime Alps and the Massif des Maures. In the east the Alps fall steeply into the sea and the coastline contains high cliffs and rocky outcrops. The Western Côte d'Azur consists of a flat coastline with distinctive red rocks. Well-known coastal towns and Yachtcharter Côte d'Azur locations are Saint-Tropez, Antibes, Cannes, Nice, Monaco and Menton. Also located on the coast of these ports are the cities: Sanary-sur-Mer, Toulon, St Mandrier, Hyères, Bormes-Les-Mimosas, Cogolin, Ste Maxime, Frejus, St Raphael, Villefranche, Beaulieu and Cavalaire-sur-Mer.

The French Mediterranean coast has a long tradition as a Charter area, and here you can find some of the best marinas in the world. The east coast is particularly striking and has many ports, marinas and anchorages. Between Menton and St. Tropez, a sailing distance of 50 nautical miles, you will find over 30 ports. The Côte d'Azur is a light sailing area. Tides and currents have little effect and cause no major problems. There are ever-changing sand bars which are best avoided by keeping a distance. Apart from the arrival and berthing in the sometimes crowded marinas, there are no major navigational challenges. The French Mediterranean coast is an ideal sailing area for beginners and less experienced yacht charter crews.

Climate & Weather

On the French Mediterranean coast there is a pleasant Mediterranean climate with more than 300 sunny days a year. The best time to sail is in the months May, June, September and October. Because of the weak winds and fine weather, the area is very popular and gets pretty crowded in high season. The winds are predominantly caused by thermal and are gentle to moderate, usually coming from the northwest. However, sailors should not underestimate the Mistral. The Mistral wind blows mainly in winter, but can occasionally occur on the coast in the summer months. It affects the northeast of the plain of Languedoc and Provence to the east of Toulon, the east coast has a good protection formation. On the Côte d'Azur there is a simple rule: Good weather comes from the west, bad weather from the East.
