Medical Requirements

There are some nasty diseases out there, but don’t worry! We have put together a comprehensive guide to vaccinations and precautions against disease when travelling abroad. Underneath each disease, we have listed our sailing destinations in which risk is present.

Tetanus

Tetanus occurs when a wound becomes infected with clostridium tetani bacteria.
Where? The organism that causes tetanus is found in all countries of the world.
Do I need a vaccine? If you: If you are travelling to areas outside Western Europe, North American and Australasia and have not had a booster in the last ten years.

Diphtheria

Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that affects the nose and throat. It is spread by droplet infection and close personal contact.
Where? Brazil, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Madagascar, Malaysia, Thailand
Do I need a vaccine? If you: Were not vaccinated as a child and will be living in an area of high risk with local people.

Typhoid

Typhoid is caused by bacteria called Salmonella typhi that spreads through the body.
Where? Africa: The Seychelles & Madagascar, Cape Verde, The Dominica Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Malaysia, Mexico, Thailand, Turkey
Do I need a vaccine? If you: Are travelling to a country where typhoid occurs.

Cholera

Cholera is caused by vibrio cholerae bacteria in drinking water.
Where? The Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Malaysia, Thailand
Do I need a vaccine? If you: Are travelling to high risk areas.

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is a virus that infects the liver causing inflammation and jaundice. It is spread through contaminated food and water.
Where? Africa: The Seychelles & Madagascar, Brazil, Cape Verde, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, The Bahamas, Malaysia, Mexico, Montenegro, Thailand
Do I need a vaccine? If you: Are travelling to high risk areas.

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is a virus that can affect the liver. It can be spread by infected blood, contaminated needles and sexual intercourse.
Where? Hepatitis B can be contracted anywhere but is more common in the following countries: Africa: The Seychelles & Madagascar, Brazil, Cape Verde, US Virgin Islands, Turks & Caicos, St Kitts & Nevis, BVI, Antigua & Barbuda, Anguilla, Guadeloupe, Dominica, Barbados, Martinique, St Lucia, St Vincent & The Grenadines, Grenada, Netherlands Antilles, Aruba, Montserrat, Cayman Islands, Trinidad & Tobago, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, The Bahamas, Croatia, Greece, Malaysia, Malta, Montenegro, Poland, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Thailand, Turkey
Do I need a vaccine? If you: Are travelling for a long period of time to areas where hepatitis B is common.

Yellow fever

Yellow fever is caused by the flavivirus spread by mosquitos and can result in organ failure.
Where? Brazil, Trinidad & Tobago 
Do I need a vaccine? If you: Are travelling to areas where there is a risk of transmitting yellow fever.
*Some countries require a proof of vaccination certificate before you can enter the country

Rabies

Rabies is a viral infection that attacks the brain and the nervous system. It is spread from infected animals to humans.
Where? Africa: Madagascar, Brazil, Cape Verde, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Croatia, Malaysia, Mexico, Montenegro, Poland, Thailand, Turkey
Do I need a vaccine? If you: Are travelling to high risk areas, and especially if you will be taking part in activities such as cycling and running, or are travelling for a long period of time.

Japanese encephalitis

This is viral infection caused by the flavivirus that is spread by infected mosquitoes, it causes headaches and high fevers and sometimes more serious symptoms.
Where? Australia, Malaysia, Thailand
Do I need a vaccine? If you: Are staying for a prolonged period of time in an affected area.

Tick-borne encephalitis

This is a viral infection spread by bites from infected ticks that affects the nervous system.
Where? Croatia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Montenegro, Poland, Scandinavia.
Do I need a vaccine? If you: Are intending to spend time in the forests and woods of affected areas.

Tuberculosis (TB)

TB is a bacterial infection that affects the lungs. It can be caught from the coughs and sneezes of an infected person.
Where? Brazil and Mexico
Do I need a vaccine? If you: Have not been previously vaccinated and will be travelling to high risk areas for a prolonged period of time.

Malaria

Malaria is a disease spread by mosquitos infected with malaria parasites.
Where? Brazil, Cape Verde, The Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mexico, Thailand
Precautions:
We recommend that you consult your doctor before travelling to a country where malaria is found and take the following precautions:

  • Take a course of antimalarial tablets
  • Use insect repellant
  • Sleep under a mosquito net
  • Stay somewhere with air conditioning
