The Northern Sporades are an island group characterized by pine forests, olive groves and white stone houses. Skiathos town is the only built up area of Skiathos, and has a large natural port. Before leaving the island visitors may wish to travel to the Moni Evangelistria, the holy monastery of Annunciation that was built during the Byzantine period. The monastery sits at the highest point of the island, and stunning views of the Sporades can be seen from here. Skopelos Town was declared a ‘Traditional Settlement of Outstanding Beauty’ in 1978, and its Venetian fortress and winding streets are very impressive. Many nice cafes and restaurants can be found on the waterfront and in the old town. Patitri and Steni Vala are both on the rugged island of Alonissos. Patitri has a beautiful harbor, and Steni Vala is a traditional fishing village. There are some excellent scuba diving sites in the area, as the seabed around Skiathos, Skopelos, and the Alonissos marine park is home to fascinating marine life, and contains many wrecks - some dating back as far as 5th century BC. Skantzoura Island on the way to Skyros is a small island with an abandoned monastery in the center.  Upon reaching Skyros, Linaria offers good protection from winds. Here you will find golden sandy beaches and tavernas serving regional cuisine. On the return to Skiathos, Panormos on the western side of Skopelos is a sheltered stop and a nice swimming spot.
