It is possible to sail all year around in the Malaysian islands. The areas around Langkawi and Tioman are easy sailing areas.
The Malaysian waters are well protected and the sailing conditions are not very demanding. There are almost no buoys or lights, and you can navigate mainly by sight. In the darkness reefs and shoals are difficult to see, and night sailing is prohibited by many yacht charter companies. It is recommended to find suitable anchorage at dusk and dock for the night. It is also important to monitor the tides as the tidal range can reach up to 3 m. The sailing areas in Langkawi and Tioman are fairly easily to sail during the dry season. When planning a sailing trip in the area around Tioman, it is useful to know that a southeast wind often blows parallel to the coast between April and October. In the evening there are sometimes winds from the west, which blow strongly at the berths on the west coast of the island. Compared to the dry season, the sailing during the rainy season is more demanding. During this period anchoring on the west coast can be problematic. However on the whole, sailing conditions in Malaysia are very pleasant.
Malaysia is a tropical destination. The climate is characterized by the monsoon and is hot and humid all year round. Temperatures are between 31 and 33 °C during the day, and between 24 and 25 °C at night. The water temperature always remains slightly below 30 °C. The East and West coasts provide the most favorable conditions. In the waters around Langkawi it is best to sail in-between November and April as this is a sunny and dry period, and the wind blows at 2 to 5 Bft from the northeast. From May to October it blows a little stronger due to the Southwest wind. Most rain falls between April and November, but compared to the east coast of Malaysia there is not a classic rainy season. It is wettest between August and November, but still with 6 to 8 hours of sunshine per day. In general, temperatures exceed 30 °C during the day and rarely drop below 20 °C at night. Tioman is recommended between April and October, as opposed to the West coast of Malaysia and Thailand. The sun shines a lot, the skies are clear and it rarely rains at this time. The wind is up to 5 Bft from the southeast and it is often necessary to sail close to the wind when it blows parallel to the coastline. This should be considered when planning a cruise.
