Tenerife is located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Morocco and Western Sahara. The island is the largest of the Canary Islands and the most populated of Spain. To the west are La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera. In the east of Gran Canaria, there is Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. Tenerife has an area of 2034 km, and is 80 km long and 50 km wide. At the center is the highest mountain in Spain, Pico del Teide at 3718 m. At the easternmost tip of the island lies the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The port and old town has many interesting historic buildings including the Canarian Parliament building and a concert hall.

The island has a pretty good sailing infrastructure. With a Yachtcharter base in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and two airports, Tenerife is an ideal starting point for a Canary cruise. In addition to Santa Cruz, there are many marinas and yacht harbors in Radazul, Los Gigantes, San Miguel and Las Galetas. The marinas provide good supply options and service. Tourism is most pronounced in the south of the island. For sailing along the east coast of Puerto Deportivo, Radazul is the best place to start. The small marina is located just 13 km from the capital, and is easy to reach. Many beautiful bays and fishing harbors are located there such as Punta de Teno and Los Gigantes. In the northwest there is a poor sailing infrastructure due to the steep coast.
Tenerife is regarded as a strong wind area and can be demanding even for experienced sailors. Throughout the year there are northeast trade winds that blow strongly and provide good sailing winds. Adventurous crews will enjoy the challenge, but relaxed sailing is rarely possible. Real storms are rare but possible in some areas where the wind is speeded up by cape effects. The island is a tidal area; the tidal range is between 2 and nearly 3 m. These water level changes seem to have no particular importance over the superior wind. There are many distinctive landmarks and only occasionally shoals. The island of Tenerife is a difficult open sea area. The navigation and the wind conditions are not to be underestimated. Because of the relatively large distances between marinas and yacht harbors and the rather low number of protected bays, the region is not recommended for beginners. However, for experienced and adventurous yacht charter crews this sea area is ideal.
