Ibiza Yacht Charters - Yachting Holiday Ibiza - Hire a Boat in Ibiza
The islands of the rich and famous can spoil even the best sailors
With its surface area measuring 572 square kilometers, Ibiza as a sailing destination is just the third largest of the Spanish Balearic Islands in the western Mediterranean Sea. The island has a worldwide reputation for having beautiful landscapes and many leisure and entertainment facilities, and though it is smaller than its sister islands Mallorca and Menorca, Ibiza does not fall short when it comes to water sport opportunities. In addition to the official languages Spanish and Catalan, the more than 133,000 people who live on Ibiza also often speak German, English or French as a result of the ever-growing tourism the island has enjoyed since the 1960s. You can certainly expect to find multilingual residents in Ibiza’s capital city, Eivissa, on the southeast coast and the home to 50,000 people, but also in the cities and towns of the other four townships – Sant Antoni de Portmany, Sant Joan de Labritja, Sant Josep de sa Talaia, and Santa Eulària des Riu. The many bathing and sporting opportunities available on the island’s 210 kilometer long coastline, with 60 different beaches, of course draw many people to the island: it sees more than one million tourists per year. For those seeking the intense nightlife that Ibiza is also famous for, the most popular beaches for clubbing include Cala de Moro, Cala Gracio/Gracioneta, Cala Salada and Sant Antoni in the northwest and Cala d’en Seea, Cala Moltons, Cala Xarraca, Platjes de Portinatx, Port de Sant Miguel, S’Aigua Blanca and S’Iliot Rencli in the northeast. For some great fun on the water, Cala Bassa, Cala Codolar, Cala d’es Cubellls, Cala Jondal, Cala Vadela, Es Xarcu, Es Torrent, Platja des Codolar, Platja de Figueretes, Platja Talamanca, and Platja Ses Salines all have a great reputation. In the southeast, Cala Boix, Cala Llonga, Cala Mastella, Cala Olivera, Cala Pada, Platjas de Santa Eulària, Platja Es Canar, S’Argamassa, S’Estanyol, and Sol d’en Serra are the best places to go.
IBIZA - marinas, ports and anchorages
Rented sailboats in Ibiza, catamarans in Ibiza and motorboats in Ibiza are allowed to anchor near many of these beaches and in altogether 70 different bays. Those who would rather take stops at marinas during their trip will have the opportunity to do so at several sites around the island.
The Puerto Deportivo Marina Ibiza and SeaHelp are the first marinas you should know about on Ibiza. Both are locked, guarded at night, and have 390 moorings directly on the harbor basin of the ferry and industry port of the capital city Eivissa. The somewhat larger Marina Botafoch is just next door, and with 428 berths, it is also closed and guarded during the night. Ibiza’s west coast offers the Club Nàutic Sant Antoni, in the region of Sant Antoni de Portmany. The marina has 550 berths and beautiful views over the bay. Puerto Deportivo de Santa Eulària des Riu on the east coast boasts 755 berths and is located centrally, the boardwalk and beaches serving as its boundaries. Both the Club Nàutic Sant Antoni and Puerto Deportivo de Santa Eulàlia des Riu are also guarded at night. While those marinas are all excellent and well-equipped, they are also often crowded due to their central location. Those seeking berths elsewhere during their sail around Ibiza swear by the dreamlike, sometimes seemingly out of a pirate film, moorings in the many small bays on the island.
IBIZA: Water Activities - Surfing, Fishing, Diving
For those who want to take a trip with a sailboat or an excursion on a motorboat and pair the experience with a few hours on a surfboard, Ibiza, with its huge selection of surfing hotspots, is the place to do it. Among the most famous are the Cala Nova and Cala Martina at Es Canar in the Santa Eulària des Riu region in the southwest, the Cala Conte near Sant Antoni de Portmany in the west, the Playa Pinet in the Bay of San Antonio in the northwest, Es Cavallet in the south, and the Playa d’en Bossa and Playa de las Salinas in the east. North of Santa Eulària around the Punta Arabi and Cala Pada are more places for surfers and wave riders to find their happiness. The wind and waves around the small islands Porroig west of the Parc Natural de Ses Salines d’Eivissa i Formentera on the southern coast and on Formentera at Illetas have a very good reputation for surfing and exploring. The numerous submerged cliffs, caves, reefs, and UNESCO World Heritage-protected sea grass meadows (posidonia) in the surrounding waters have made Ibiza a favorite place over the last decades for hobby divers to dive. Some very well known spots are Es Vedranell, Ses Margalides, Sa Pedrera, and the Iles Bledes. In the roughly 20 dive centers on the island, you can also sign up for a guided tour of the underwater world. You can book such tours at and around Sant Antoni de Portmany, Sant Josep de sa Talaia, Sant Joan de Labritja, on the Cala Llonga, and the Port des Torrent. The 2007 wreck of the freighter “Don Pedro” lies in the harbor outside of Ibiza’s capital, and is included on some guided dives. Consulting the tourist information center on the Paseo Vara de Rey in Ibiza and the PDF file “Ibiza Classic Dives”, available online, are helpful ways to plan a great sailing trip in Ibiza. The type of sea life ready to bite on a fishing line in Ibiza’s waters include dorade, mullet, squid, waller, pike, and perch. The areas around Portinax in the north are sometimes recommended as successful fishing spots. Anyone fluent in Spanish can inform themselves further over the fishing in the area, as well as on competitions, can have a look at Pesca Club Sant Antoni de Portmany’s website, www.pescaibiza.es. Something you should absolutely not do, however, is sell your private catch to a restaurant. Doing so could result in a penalty fine ranging from 30,000 to 150,000 euros.
Round the coasts of Ibiza and Formentera with a Sirocco from YACHTICO
150 yachts and boats are currently available to sail around Ibiza and Formentera through the new and already successful worldwide platform for yacht charters: YACHTICO.com. There, you can search for and book yacht charters for all around the world. From Ibiza, weekly prices range from 1200 euros for a compact, simple boat to 24,000 euros for a luxurious motor yacht. The most common model years for the boats in Ibiza are 2005 to 2012. A popular roundtrip leads via the capital city Eivissa to Cala Llonga, Santa Eulària des Riu, Cala Boix, Ses Caletes, Port de San Miguel, Cala Gracio, Sant Antoni, Sa Conillera, Porroig, and Playa d’en Bossa.
From the Boat to the Board, on a Fishing Line or in the Deep
A great place to take advantage of the coves and tucked away bays on Ibiza is in the south at the Cala Porroig. With its 12-meter-deep and crystal clear waters, it is a great place to combine a sailing rest with a snorkeling adventure. Cala Vadella in the southwest near Sant Josep de sa Talaia is also a beautiful place to stop. Here we have some sailing itinerary suggestions for Ibiza for you.
It has a dream setting with a 200 meter long and up to 75 meter wide sand beach, the alleged rocks from Atlantis Es Vedrà, diving schools, pedal boats, and jet ski rental on the nearby idyllic Cala Carbo Bay.
The Bay of Sant Antoni in the northwest is also highly recommendable, as is Portinatx in the north near the municipality Sant Joan de Labritja. The southern part of Ibiza offers Santa Eulària, Cala d’Hort, Es Cubells, Ca Llentrisca, Es Xarco, and Es Jonal as its picture-worthy anchorages, and Cala Portinax, Cala Charraca, Cala Ubarca, Cala San Miguel and the Bay of San Antonio are beautiful places to see and to go scuba diving.
The eastern coast of Ibiza is not very recommendable for anchoring, but the small neighboring island Formentera, about 28 nautical miles from Ibiza, is a lovely place. Sailing there will bring you past the tiny Isla Conejera, which also has two beautiful spots to anchor at, and the Isla Espalmador has very secure berths in front of the sandy beach Platja de s’Alga in the south. Around the remaining and sometimes uninhabited islands in the area, such as Es Vedranell, Sa Galera and Tagomago, a skipper on his sailboat can sometimes feel like a buccaneer from bygone days.
